Tech Experts: PS5 Pro Unlikely to Hit 60fps with GTA 6

Digital Foundry, along with verification from IGN, has delved into the leaked specs of the PlayStation 5 Pro, offering insights into its capabilities, especially concerning the anticipated performance of GTA 6 on the console.

Scheduled for a Q4 2024 release by Sony, the PS5 Pro boasts an enhanced CPU with a ‘High CPU Frequency Mode’ enabling a 10% boost to 3.85GHz, and a GPU that supports advanced ray tracing with 33.5 teraflops of power, significantly up from the standard PS5’s 10.28 teraflops. Despite these upgrades, the PS5 to PS5 Pro performance might see a comparison of approximately 10.28 to 16 or 17 teraflops.

The PS5 Pro’s introduction is eagerly awaited, particularly with GTA 6’s 2025 launch on the horizon, promising a surge in the gaming market. However, Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter suggests that, based on the PS5 Pro’s CPU capabilities and historical precedents from GTA games, GTA 6 is likely to operate at 30fps on both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro, barring exceptional developments.

Digital Foundry highlights the PS5 Pro’s superior rendering capabilities, including a feature for upscaling 1080p games to 4K through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling (PSSR), assuming developers implement support for this technology. Despite sharing the same 16GB of GDDR6 memory with the standard PS5, the Pro version benefits from an additional 1.2GB of system RAM for developers.

Amid expectations for a 2024 release, Sony’s pattern of introducing Pro versions of its consoles hints at the PS5 Pro’s arrival, following a similar timeline to the PS4 Pro. However, Sony has adjusted its PS5 sales forecast downward from 25 million to 21 million units for the current financial year, even with an increase in PS5 sales during the holiday 2023 quarter.

Sony has also announced it won’t launch major sequels for its key PlayStation franchises before April 2025. Meanwhile, recent layoffs affecting over 900 employees and the closure of Sony’s London studio reflect broader challenges within the company’s gaming division.

PC will get improved graphics/performance, until PS6 releases with equal visual fidelity. As well as new modes like first person view. Which PC will have to wait patiently years for. Also load times on boot will be astronomical until a single dev finds a one line bug to fix.
