Sony Secures GTA 6 Marketing Rights Ahead of Launch
A recent report indicates that Sony has secured exclusive marketing rights for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), promoting the game alongside the PS5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro. Sony and Rockstar Games have a long-standing partnership dating back to the PS2 era, so this collaboration wouldn’t be entirely unexpected.
Few gaming franchises have reached the mainstream popularity of GTA, which has sold over 410 million units as of September 2023. With the immense anticipation surrounding the next installment, GTA 6 is expected to significantly boost that figure. Despite being set for a fall 2025 release, fans are eagerly awaiting more details from Rockstar, often trying to interpret “clues” about when the next major reveal will happen, though nothing concrete has emerged.
Speculation continues about when the next GTA 6 trailer will drop, and a new rumor suggests Sony has struck a deal with Rockstar for exclusive marketing rights. According to industry insider MAGG, who shared details on the XNC Podcast, Sony has “locked down” an agreement allowing them to advertise the game exclusively with the PS5 and PS5 Pro. MAGG emphasized that this deal won’t affect the game’s availability on Xbox Series X/S, but could limit its marketing presence on Microsoft platforms.
Sony is expected to push “heavily” on marketing GTA 6 for the PS5 Pro, according to MAGG, who also hinted that the second GTA 6 trailer might include the PlayStation logo and could debut at the 2024 Game Awards. While MAGG wasn’t certain about the timing, insider RedGamingTech supported the claim, stating that Sony is likely to leverage GTA 6 for a major marketing push around the PS5 Pro. However, both insiders advise taking this information with caution until it’s confirmed.
If PlayStation has indeed secured the exclusive marketing for a massive title like GTA 6, it could be a significant advantage. This would associate GTA 6 with PlayStation in consumers’ minds and potentially allow Sony to bundle the game with PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles. As a next-gen-only title, GTA 6 is expected to boost sales for both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and first-time buyers may be drawn to whichever console includes the game. There’s also speculation that the PS5 Pro might offer a dedicated mode allowing GTA 6 to run at 60fps, but this remains unconfirmed.
