GTA 6: Use Advanced Water Rendering Technology

The “reveal” of GTA 6 was without a doubt one of the most significant news stories of 2022. However, this “reveal” was not an official announcement, but rather a leak that unveiled an early version of the game. The graphics presented in this version were met with criticism from some gamers who found the visuals to be lackluster. Nonetheless, many developers defended Rockstar Games, stating that early builds are not intended to be visually appealing but to showcase the game’s potential. Now that the hype has died down, fans eagerly await the official unveiling of the game.

As fans eagerly anticipate the official unveiling of GTA 6, new rumors have emerged. Recently, Aleix Venturas shared on Twitter that Rockstar Mag has reported that the game may feature a unique water rendering system similar to NVIDIA Waterworks, resulting in exceptionally realistic water graphics. However, this technology comes with a hefty price tag, which may limit its usage within the game. To address this issue, Rockstar is reportedly developing a solution of their own to ensure that players can experience high-quality graphics throughout the game.

According to Venturas, the plan is to assemble a team of approximately twenty engineers from Rockstar San Diego’s RAGE Technology Group to develop a new physics system for water in GTA 6. Currently, video games utilize a mesh system, which represents water with a wireframe, creating the illusion of rippling liquid. This method is energy-efficient, but RAGE 9 aims to introduce a new system that will provide physically simulated water in real-time. While this technology has existed for years in cinema and 3D applications, it has never been utilized in real-time. NVIDIA attempted to implement this with WaveWorks 1.0 and 2.0, but the realism and performance ratio were not ideal.

The possibilities of this rumor are vast, with the most significant being the inclusion of various water-based activities in GTA 6 that would require advanced water rendering technology. It is intriguing that the source shared such specific information, suggesting that there may be truth to the rumor. One could argue that they could have posted about any feature to build hype for the game, but they chose to focus on water, adding credibility to the speculation. However, until Rockstar officially unveils the game, these rumors will persist, and its release date remains uncertain.
