Rockstar Won’t Release GTA 6 Until It’s Perfect, Says Former Dev

Former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij believes Rockstar can afford to take its time with the release of GTA 6, citing the lack of competition and the game’s potential to sell for over a decade. Vermeij, who left Rockstar North 15 years ago after serving as a technical lead, shared his thoughts on Twitter, emphasizing that he has no insider information. He speculated that Rockstar won’t lock in a 2025 release date until early that year, noting that the studio won’t release GTA 6 until they are completely satisfied, regardless of any marketing or trailers.

In a follow-up tweet, Vermeij suggested that the PC version, while not yet confirmed, might not arrive until 2027, based on Rockstar’s past release strategies. He also dismissed the possibility of pressure from Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, saying that Take-Two has consistently given Rockstar the freedom to make their own decisions.

Vermeij’s comments underscore GTA 6’s potential longevity, much like its predecessor, GTA 5, which has continued to thrive due to multiple re-releases and the success of GTA Online. GTA 6 is anticipated to be one of the most significant releases in the history of the gaming industry, with expectations that it could influence interest in games on a broader scale.

Interestingly, Vermeij himself is working on a new project, which is vastly different from GTA’s violent, open-world formula.

Meanwhile, tech experts have suggested that GTA 6 may not run at 60fps on the PS5 Pro, although it will likely feature improved visuals.
